What is Electroporation?
Electroporation is an efficient method for enhancing transdermal drug delivery and effective alternative as a non-chemical and non-invasive delivery of macromolecules, without damaging the biological structure and function of cells.
This method involves the application of high voltage pulses to the skin which induces a dramatic and reversible increase in transmembrane transport and structural changes in the membrane barrier, which leads to the creation of pores or aqueous pathways. Thus, enhancing the skin permeability of molecules with differing lipophilicity and size (i.e. small molecules, proteins, peptides, and oligonucleotides).
The technique enables transdermal delivery non- polar and neutral drugs. It uses pulses that are controlled in value, time duration and electrical characteristics which the patientâ€™s skin can tolerate without problem.
