Problems of road transport
- Small network of roads - The country is vast but the size of road length is very small in comparison. Hilly tracts and other interior areas are yet to be linked with roads.
- Mud roads cannot be used for plying heavy traffic but large tracts of rural roads are still mud roads.
- Excess corruption, high operations cost ,etc have kept State Road Transport Corporations running under heavy losses.
- There is poor maintenance of urban roads due to procedural delays, organizational inadequacies, etc.
The National Highways Development Project (NHDP) which involves developing Golden Quadrilateral (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata), north-south and east-west corridors, port connectivity etc., are the steps that have been taken to overcome the problems.
