Different acids are present in different substances.

Example :

  • Apples contain malic acid,
  • Tamarind contains tartaric acid,
  • Tea contains tannic acid and
  • Tomatoes contain oxalic acid.

We use washing soda and lime which are soapy to touch and have a bitter taste. These substances are called bases or alkalis. Bases are bitter in taste. Bases are chemically opposite to acid. So they neutralise each other giving a new type of compound called salts. We use common salt, which is a compound formed from acid and base.

In our daily life, two types of acids can be used:

Mineral Acids:

  • Hydrochloric acid (HCl) for cleaning kitchen sink and sanitary wares.
  • Goldsmiths clean the gold and silver ornaments with nitric acid (HNO3).
  • Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) is used in batteries for cars and automobiles.

Organic Acids:

  • Lactic acid (Sour milk)
  • Citric acid (Citrus fruits)
  • Tartaric acids (Tamarind)
  • Formic acid (Red ants)
