Aromatic and Alicylic Hydrocarbons

The word aroma means pleasant odour. So the name aromatic hydrocarbons was given to compounds having pleasant odour. But today all those compounds resembling characteristic features of benzene were given the name of aromatic hydrocarbons.

The molecular formula of benzene is C6H6 and it possesses a ring of six carbon atoms, each carbon having one hydrogen attached to it.

The benzene molecule contains 3 carbon-carbon double bonds and 3 carbon-carbon single bonds.

Alicyclic Hydrocarbons
In these hydrocarbons the carbon atoms are arranged in the form of a ring like structure but which resemble aliphatic hydrocarbons in their properties, e.g. cycloalkanes, cycloalkenes and cycloalkynes.
