Emerging from the Shadow of China
Indo-China lies in the east of India and south of China. Indo-China comprises of the territories of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
Countries of Southeast Asia received cultural influence from both China and India to varying degrees.
Most Southeast Asian countries are influenced mainly by the culture of India with a smaller influence from the culture of China.
In Vietnam alone the main foreign influence is from the culture of China and very little from India.
- Vietnam was also linked to the maritime silk route. This brought in goods, people and ideas. Other networks of trade connected it to places where non-Vietnamese people such as the Khmer Cambodians lived.
