Republic of Vietnam was formed after three decades of fighting, though it gained formal independence in 1945. This chapter mainly deals with one of the important states in the peninsula, Vietnam. Colonisation resulted by bringing together the different communities of a modern Vietnamese nation and the struggle against colonial domination shaped it. There were a number of differences in which colonial empires functioned and the anti-imperial movement developed, when compared to India. A look at such differences and similarities can make us understand the variety of ways in which nationalism has developed and shaped the contemporary world.
