Growth and development are the two processes through which the unicellular zygote develops into a multicellular organism. The terms 'growth' may imply enlargement of a cell or of an organism, or it may even refer to the increase in the size of a population. However, in a basic sense, growth means simple enlargement. The enlargement may be brought about by the increase in the size of individual cells, or by the multiplication of cells. Development may be defined as the "progressive appearance of the mature multicellular form of the organism following the fusion of gametes". In the formation of the multicellular organism from the zygote both development and growth occurs and most of the time they go on simultaneously. However, at certain times development precedes growth and at other times growth precedes development.
