onditions for Exchanging Energy

A system and its surroundings can exchange energy in the form of mechanical work also. There are two conditions for such an exchange.
  1. The system and the surroundings are thermally isolated.
  2. The volume of the system is liable to change, i.e. V is not zero.
For instance, when a mixture of petrol vapour and air is burnt, it produces energy by the expansion of the gases and is used for driving the motor engine.
