# Role of Zeroes and One

Property of Zero :

Any rational number added to 0, is the rational number itself.

Example : If 'p' is a rational number, then p+ 0 = 0 + p = p. Hence 0 is called the identity element.

Example : (i)

(ii)

Role of 1

× 1

× 1 =

A number when multiplied by 1 gives the same number itself, hence 1 is called as the multiplicative identity for rational numbers.
