The Happenings of 1922-1929

As the Non-Cooperation Movement turned violent in some places Gandhiji called off the movement.

The incidence that made Gandhiji call off the movement was Chauri Chaura incidence. Here the peasants set fire to a police station and 22 policemen died. The setting of the police station was in retaliation to the police firing at a peaceful demonstration by the peasants.

  • As the Non-Cooperation Movement was abandoned, the Congress leaders wanted to under take development work in rural areas.

Motilal Nehru was an early Indian independence activist and leader of the Indian National Congress. He was the founder patriarch of India's most powerful political family, the Nehru-Gandhi family.

  • The Gandhians extended support to the Congress leaders and soon the Civil Disobedience Movement was launched in 1930.

  • Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a Hindu Organisation gained strength.

  • The Communist Party of India was also formed.

  • Bhagat Singh, a revolutionary leader gained popularity during this period.

  • During the end of 1930 the Congress and other leaders decided to fight for Purna Swaraj, which means complete independence.

  • In 1930, the Congress under the Presidentship of Jawaharlal Nehru celebrated 26th of January as Independence Day.
