Word Order

The order of words in a sentence is of great importance. Owing to faulty arrangement of words, a sentence may be turned meaningless.


A gentle man has a house to sell, who wishes to go abroad (wrong).
A gentle man, who wishes to go abroad, has a house to sell (right).


It is therefore essential that all qualifying words, phrases and clauses should be placed as near as possible to the words to which they refer.
The following is the usual order in which the words are arranged in an english sentence:
The subject usually comes before the verb, as,
The dog bit the horse.
The object usually comes after the verb, as,
The king wears a crown.
