Transformation in Colonial India

There were significant changes in the clothing of males and females, during the colonial period in India. There were people who reacted in three different ways when the western – style of clothing came into India.

To the first category belonged the men who took the changes in the dressing style which came from the west. Baggy trousers, Phentas (hats) collarless coats, boots and a walking stick were the different forms of clothing which they adopted from the west.

The second category of people were convinced that the western culture would create a great loss of our traditional cultural identity. These people moved away from the western style. The third category of people were those who had taken up the western style without giving up the Indian culture. These changes had a turbulent history, however.
