Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Annapurna Scheme

  • Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Annapurna Scheme are special Programmes which were launched in 2000, to support the poorest of the poor and needy senior citizens.
  • Both these schemes are linked with the existing Public Distribution System.
  • More than one crore families below the poverty line have benefited through this scheme.
  • The poor families are identified by the Rural Development Department using the statistic of the ‘Below the poverty line’ survey.
  • 25 kg of food grains are sold to these families at a very affordable price.
  • In 2003, 50 lakh more families benefited under this scheme.
  • In 2004, another 50 lakh families were included in this scheme.
  • So, today about 2 crore families benefit under this scheme.
