Cape Kanyakumari is the Southernmost tip of the Indian mainland, however – ‘Indira Point’ in the Little Nicobar group of islands is considered the southern most point in the Indian union – this point is now partially submerged following the Tsunami that hit South and South East Asia in December 2004.

The Indira Point Light House

The Indira Point Light House is situated at the southern most point of India. It is named after the Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The Light House was hit very badly by a Tsunami which followed the earthquake on 26th December, 2004. 17 lives were lost at Indira Point due to the disaster. The 30 meters tall lighthouse tower is submerged partially in a 3 meter high water column. The lighthouse is a very important navigational aid for ships on that route.
