Distinction between the three States of Matter on the basis of Particle Model
The main points of distinction between the solids, liquids and gases are given below:





1. State of aggregation The molecules are closely packed. The molecules are loosely packed. The molecules are apart at greater distances.
2. Intermolecular forces Mutual forces of attraction between the molecules are maximum. Forces of attraction between molecules are less than those in the case of solids. Forces of attraction between the molecules are negligible.
3. Molecular motion The molecules possess vibratory motion. Molecules have linear as well as vibratory motion. Motion is restricted to the boundary of the liquid. Molecules have complete freedom of motion. They possess translatory, vibratory and rotatory motions.
4. Energy Molecules possess very less energy. Molecules possess greater energy than solid molecules. These molecules have greater energy than solid and liquid molecules.  
5. Density The density of solid is high. The density of liquid is less than that of solids. Gases have less density than solids and liquids.
6. Shape and Volume Solids possess definite shape and definite volume. This is due to the close packing of molecules in solids. Liquids do not have definite shape. This is due to the loose packing of the molecules. Gases have neither a definite shape nor volume. It is due to the random motion of molecules.
7.Compressibility Solids are least compressible. It is due to the small empty space between their molecules. It is slightly more than that in solids. Gases are highly compressible. It is due to the large empty spaces between the molecules.
8. Diffusion Solids have no tendency to diffuse. Liquids have a small tendency to diffuse slowly. Gases show the property of diffusion. It is again due to the negligible forces of attraction between the molecules.
