Tropical Deciduous Forests

 

Tropical Deciduous Forests are the most widespread forests of India. They are also called the monsoon forests.

  • Tropical Deciduous Forests thrive where the rainfall is between 70cm. and 200 cm.
     
  • The trees in these forests shed their leaves for about six to eight weeks in summer.
  • The Deciduous Forests are divided into:
    • Moist Deciduous Forests

    • Dry Deciduous Forests

     

    Moist Deciduous Forests

    • These forests are found in areas where the rainfall is between 100cm. to 200 cm.

    • They are found in the north eastern states of Jharkhand, West Orissa and Chhattisgarh

    • Moist Deciduous Forests are also found on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats

    • Teak trees are the most dominant species of trees found in these forests.

    • Bamboos, sal, shisham, sandalwood, khair, kusum, arjun, mulberry are some of the other commercially important species found here.

     

    Dry Deciduous Forests

    • These forests are found in areas where the rainfall is between 70cm. to 100 cm.
    • These forests are found in the rainier parts of the peninsular plateau
    • They are also found in the plains of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
    • Teak, Sal, Peepal, and Neem are some of the variety of trees that are found here.
    • Lion, tiger, pig, deer and elephant are some of animals that make these forests their habitat.
    • A large variety of birds, lizards, snakes, and tortoises are also found here.
