Wheat Farmers and the Bread Basket

Wheat Field

The White Americans settled in the west

  • They cleared larger areas, erected fences around the fields.
  • They ploughed the land and sowed corn and wheat.
  • In the early years, as the soil was fertile it produced good crops.
  • Later when the  soil became infertile, they migrated more westward and explored new land.
  • In 1860s they settled in the Great Plains across the River Mississippi.
  • In the subsequent years, this region became the major wheat producing area of America and was called the Bread Basket.
