Health and Family Welfare Ministry

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is one of the most important Ministries of the Government of India. The ministry is headed by Mr. Ghulam nabi Azad (2009) and has administrative control over the following departments.

Department of Health:

Department of Health deals with all health related activities. These activities includes various immunization campaigns, National Aids Control, National Health Programs, Medical Education & Training , and Hospital Services.

Department of Family Welfare:

The functions of this Department includes Maternal and Child Health Services, Rural Health Services; Assistance for Family Welfare and Urban Health Services.

Healthcare in Rural India

Healthcare delivery in India comes in three forms. There is the public health system, the private health system, and the network of traditional healers that exists throughout the country. These three elements come together to form the health-care delivery system of the country.

Department of AYUSH

The Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) was established in 1995 as the Department of Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoeopathy .
The objectives of the department are:-
  • To draw up schemes for promotion, cultivation and regeneration of medicinal plants used in these systems
  • To evolve Pharmacopoeia standards for Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy drugs
  • To upgrade the educational standards in the Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoeopathy colleges in the country
  • To strengthen research institutions and speed-up research programmes on diseases for which these systems have an effective treatment
Over the last 50 years India has built up an enormous infrastructure for health care. The man power required for all 3 economic sectors have also been mobilised.
The private sector along with the public sector plays an important role in Health care in India.
In spite of the efforts taken by the government there are many places in India which do not have even these basic health facilities.
Health care is not the sole concern of the government , every citizen can do his or her bit by keeping themselves and their surroundings clean.
A clean environment is a healthy environment.
