Area of the curved surface of cylinder = circumference ´ height = 2prh sq. units

Area of each circular bases =
pr2 sq. units

Total surface area of a cylinder = Area of curved surface + Area of two circular ends

= 2

pr(r + h) sq. units.  where h is the height of the cylinder and r its radius. Here is an irrational number and when we use in our calculations , we usually take its value as approximately equal to or 3.14

Find the curved surface area, total surface area and volume of a cylinder of diameter 7 cm and height 80 cm.
Use , unless stated otherwise

 

Solution:

Diameter of the base = 7 cm 

Þ  r = 3.5 cm 

Height of the cylinder = 80 cm = h

Curved surface area = 2
prh sq.units

= 2
´ ´ 3.5 x 80

Curved surface of a cylinder= 1760 cm2

Total surface area = 2
pr(r + h) sq.units

                          = 2
´ ´ 3.5(3.5 + 80)

Total surface of the cylinder= 1837 cm
2

Volume = cubic units

Volume of the cylinder= 3080
