This is a very common disease in human beings, which is caused by a protozoan parasite called Plasmodium vivax. The parasite has two hosts; the mosquito (primary host) and man (secondary host).

Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito which is the vector. Vectors are usually insects like mosquitoes and flies which carry the disease-causing organisms.

A person affected by malaria has high fever, shivering and profuse sweating, often accompanied by severe headache. Anti-malarial drugs like quinine and chloroquine are used for treating malaria.

Control Measures
Preventive measures should be taken against the breeding of mosquitoes.

(i) Liquid insecticides like DDT, Baygon spray and flit should be sprayed inside the house.

(ii) Out dwelling place, neighbourhood, as well as cities and towns should be kept free from stagnant water, open drains and ditches.

(iii) Larvae of mosquitoes found in stagnant waters should be destroyed by spraying insecticides.
