A Snapshot View of the Development Path
All the three countries: India, China and Pakistan have embarked on the path of economic growth during the same time. While India and Pakistan gained their independence in 1947, People's Republic of China was formed in 1949. Jawaharlal Nehru had remarked that the revolutionary changes in India and China symbolized a spirit of vitality which was spreading in Asia.
India announced her Five year plans first from 1951-56, while China announced hers in 1953 and Pakistan in 1956. Pakistan has had eight five year plans so far while India and China are out of their tenth. Raising the public sector and increased expenses towards social causes were the similarities between the Indian and Pakistani strategies. Till 1980s the three nations had very similar growth and per capita income. Let us now study them:
