CAT-2003-Previous Years Paper
A piece of paper is in the shape of a right-angled triangle and is cut along a line that is parallel to the hypotonuse, leaving a smaller triangle. There was 35% reduction in the length of the hypotonuse of the triangle. If the area of the original triangle was 34 square inches before the cut, what is the area (in square inches) of the smaller triangle?
The required answer is 34×0.65×0.65 = 14.365. Because we get two similar triangles and the area is proportional to the square of its side.
