Premature graying is defined as graying before the age of 30, graying of the hair is mostly genetically determined and is a natural process.

Melanin is the pigment that gives colour to the hair and skin. Cells called melanocytes produce this pigment, which is situated in the hair roots. It is when the functioning melanocytes are absent that premature graying occurs.
