Aspirin - It acetylates and inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase & TX synthetase - inactivating them irreversibly. The platelets are exposed to aspirin in portal circulation before it gets deacetylated in the liver and hence BT.

Causes of BT- any qualitative or quantitative defect of platelets.

E.g. - von Willebrand disease, ITP, glanzman throm­oasthenia, uremia etc.

Causes of thrombin time (TI)

a. Afibrinogenemia

b. Dysfibrinogenemia

c. Heparin administration

Causes of PT - Deficiency of factor VII or vitamin K,

Warfarin administration

Causes of PIT - Deficiency of factor XII, HMW kininogen, pre kallikrein.

Deficiency of factor XI, VIII, IX
