A simple bacterial test for mutagenic carcinogen is (LQ)

A Ames test
B Redox test

C Bacteriophage
D Gene splicing

Ans. A i.e. Ames test

a. "Ames assay has proved useful in screening for potential carcinogen. "

b. Majority of initiating chemicals are mutagenic so their mutagenic potential has to be determined before introducing commercially.

c. Mutagenic potential has been determined most commonly by using Ames test.

d. AMES Test:

i. Ames test uses the ability of chemical to induce mutation in bacterium 'Salmonella typhimurium'(His). - If chemicals are mutagenic than it convert Hist salmonella to Hist+ salmonella so it can synthesize histidine and can grow in medium lacking histidine.

ii. Ames test identifies approximately 90% of known carcinogen.
