Under the national rural health mission one of the important component of plan of action to strengthen the primary health care is by creation of a cadre of accredited social health activist (ASHA) at the village level.
i. Selection – must be a resident of the village in the age group of 25 – 45 yrs with formal education upto VIII class & having communication and leadership skills.
ii. Norm - 1ASHA for 1000 population; in tribal, hilly & desert areas I ASHA for every habitation
b. Role & Responsibility
i. Create awareness & provide information to the community on determinants of health
ii. Counsel women on birth preparedness, Importance of safe delivery, breast feeding & other aspects of child care
iii. Mobilize community to access health care provided under primary health care
iv. Work with village health & sanitation committee to develop a comprehensive health plan
v. Escort pregnant women and children who require referral
vi. Act as depot holder for ORS, IFA, DDK, contraceptives & some essential drugs
vii. Promote construction of household toilets
viii. Inform the Sc & PHC about births, deaths or any unusual heath occurance or outbreak in her village.
