a. Furosemide is a rapidly acting diuretic and acts upon thick ascending segment of loop of Henle. It is used for acute hypercalemia, acute hyperurecemia, malignant hypertension and acute pulmonary edema.
b. IV morphine is the drug of choice for acute pulmonary edema with left ventricular failure.
c. Because loop diuretics are so effective, they should be used with caution in patients who are likely to be particularly susceptible to volume contraction from excessive diuresis - an example would be treatment of hypertension in the elderly with little or no edema.
d. It is also available in oral preparation.
