All are true about Staph Lugdunesis except

A present normally as skin commensal
B can cause valve endocarditis
C susceptible to broad range of antibiotics
D lacks production of coagulase

Ans. D lacks production of coagulase

a. Staph.lugdunensis is a constituent of the normal human skin flora and an infrequent, but not rare, human pathogen.

b. S. lugdunensis may produce a bound coagulase (that is, the enzyme is bound to the cells), a property it shares with S. aureus, but unlike S. aureus, it does not produce a free coagulase

c. More virulent than other coagulase-negative staphylococci because of the production of several virulence factors, including a delta toxin–like hemolytic peptide, a variety of adhesins promoting adherence to collagen, fibronectin, fibrinogen, laminin, and vitronectin, a variety of enzymes including DNase and lipase, lysozyme resistance, and biofilm formation

d. S. lugdunensis behaves clinically in a manner similar to S. aureus and has been described to cause fulminant NVE and PVE, skin and soft tissue infection, bacteremia, ocular infection, UTI AND CNS infection, bone and joint infection, and peritonitis

e. The organism is generally susceptible to most antistaphylococcal antibiotics because β-lactamase production is found in only about 25% of strains and methicillin resistance is uncommon
