General Virology and DNA Viruses
All of the following are true about bacteriophage, except: (AIIMS Nov 2012)
|A||It is a virus which infects bacteria|
|B||It helps in transduction|
|C||It imparts toxigenicity to bacteria|
|D||It transfers only chromosomal genes|
a. Viruses which infect bacteria are called bacteriophages. They play an important role in the transmission of genetic information between bacteria.
b. Transfer of genetic material by bacteriophages is called transduction. Chromosomal/plasmid DNA can be transferred.
c. The presence of phage genome integrated with bacterial chromosome confers on the bacteria certain properties by a process called phage conversion or Lysogenic conversion.
d. Lysogenic phages confer toxigenicity to bacteria, eg. C. diphtheriae, E. coli, V. cholerae, Cl. botulinum, etc.
