a. Progesterone pills - mechanism of action

i. Uterus - Progesterone brings about secretary changes in the estrogen primed endometrium: hyperemia, tortuosity of glands and increased secretion occurs while epithelial proliferation is suppressed.

ii. Cervix - Progesterone converts the watery cervical secretion induced by estrogens to viscid, scanty and cellular secretion which is hostile to sperm penetration,

iii. Vagina - progesterone induces pregnancy like changes in vaginal mucosa –leukocyte infiltration of cornified epithelium

b. Progesterone carrying devices causes alteration in the cervical mucus which prevents penetration of sperms.

c. Contraindication - Previous ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cyst, breast and genital cancers, abnormal vaginal bleed, active liver, and arterial disease, porphyria

d. Uses - contraceptive, HRT, DVB, Endometriosis, endometrial carcinoma, premenstrual tension, threatened / habitual abortion.
