An HIV positive female has a lesion over the tongue. Microscopy shows budding yeast cell and pseudohyphae and growth in human serum at 37 degrees shows true hyphae. The most probable cause is (AIPG 2009)
Candida albicans is diagnosed by germ tube formation (true hypha) in serum at 37 C. This ability is also called Reynolde’ Braude phenomenon.
a. Candida glabrata à Only candida species not to produce pseudohyphae.
b. Candida tropicalis à In certain center in India, It is the commonest non-albicans species which is isolated from patients with blood stream infection.
c. Candida Kefyr (Earlier known as candida pseudotropicalis) à Used as standard strain in antifungal drug susceptibility testing.
