An anti emetic drug that also decreases acid secretion due to its action on H1 receptors (LQ)

A Promethazine
B Domperidone

C Metoclopramide
D Ondansetron

Ans. A Promethazine

a. Promethazine is an H1 antihistaminic drug of promethazine class. It has a wide variety of uses (BG Katzung’ 10th Edition, 2010).

b. Sedative-Hypnotic

c. Antiemetic

d. Anti-allergic

e. Anti motion sickness

f. Morning sickness

g. Anti-urticaria

h. As a potentiating agent for meperidine (pethidine)

i. Domperidone is a D2 blocker and is used as an antiemetic. The main advantage of this drug is its inability to enter blood brain barrier. Metoclopramide is a dual drug and is D2 blocker that readily enters blood brain barrier.

j. The drug also has an additional property of stimulating cholinergic receptors. It increases motility of small stomach and small intestine and does not have an action on gut muscles.

k. Ondansetron is a 5-HT3 antagonist and is used for post operative, radiation and chemotherapy induced vomiting. Palonosetron is most potent out of them (BG Katzung’ 10th Edition, 2010).
