At high (but not necessarily toxic) blood levels, another drug with which you should be familiar causes many signs and symptoms that resembles what you see with “low grade” aspirin toxicity (salicylism). Which is it? (AIPG 2012)
|D||Quinine or quinidine|
a. Many of the signs and symptoms of salicylism are similar to those caused by high blood levels of quinine (anti malarial) or quinidine (antiarrhythmic, mainly).
b. These drugs are called cinchona alkaloids, and the syndrome is called cinchonism.
c. Aspirin and the cinchona alkaloids are chemically similar in some important ways.
