Botulism toxin causes: (DNB June 2009)
|A||Increase in smooth muscle activity|
a. Botulinum toxin is the most potent toxin causing disease in humans. It blocks the release of acetylcholine in the neuromuscular junction and parasympathetic nervous system.
b. Therefore it causes flaccid paralysis and is parasympatholytic.
c. There are 8 antigenic types of botulinum toxins and a strain of the bacterium may produce more than one type. They have the same effect, i.e blocking the release of acetylcholine.
d. Toxins C and D are phage mediated. They are synthesized as a protoxin that is broken down by trypsin into 2 parts.
