Catamenial Epilepsy –
1). Increased seizure frequency around the time of menstruation.
2). This is due to effects of estrogen and progesterone on neuronal excitability or change in antiepileptic drug levels due to altered protein binding.
3). Treatment - (Ref. Hari-18th ed., pg- 3269)
a. Some patients may benefit from increases in antiepileptic drug dosages during menses.
b. Natural progestins or intramuscular medroxyprogesterone may be of benefit to a subset of women.
c. Acetazolamide as adjunctive therapy.
