Cataracts and PDA in a newborn suggests in utero infection with which viral family? (AIIMS May 2012)
a. This is seen in congenital rubella infection. Rubella virus belongs to togavirus family. The infection is transmitted by the respiratory route.
b. The rash of rubella occurs for only three days. Infected pregnant women can transmit the infection to the fetus.
c. The transmission is most common as well as the infection is most dangerous during the first trimester of pregnancy.
d. The manifestations of congenital rubella syndrome are sensorineural deafness, cataract and congenital heart malformations. Rubella can be prevented by live attenuated vaccine (strain RA27/3)
