Cereals and proteins are considered complementary because:
|A||Both cereals and pulses contain threonine|
|B||Cereals are deficient in lysine and pulses are deficient in methionine|
|C||Cereals are deficient in methionine and pulses are deficient in lysine|
|D||Cereals are deficient in methionine|
Cereal proteins are poor in nutritive quality, being deficient in the essential amino acid, lysine and threonine. Pulse proteins are poor in methionine and to a lesser extent in cysteine. On the other hand they are rich in lysine. If cereals are eaten with pulses, cereals and pulse proteins complement each other and provide a more balanced and complete protein intake.
