Cerebellar ataxia is caused by (DNB June 2012)
Cytarabine (Arabinofuranosyl cytidine) is used intrathecally for meningeal leukemia. This can cause cerebellar toxicity – ataxia & slurred speech as well as cerebral toxicity – seizures, dementia, coma etc. Coma may follow esp. in old age patients as well in those with reduced renal function. The other side effects are potent myelosuppression, GIT & mucosal side effects, dermatitis, reversible rise in LFT & pulmonary side effects.
Cisplatin causes peripheral neuropathy.
Major toxicity with busulfan is myelosuppression, pulmonary fibrosis while with high dose it can cause veno-occlusive disease of liver, seizures, hemorrhagic cystitis, cataracts and alopecia.
Bleomycin causes little myelosuppression; but high cutaneous & pulmonary toxicity. It does not exhibit neurotoxicity.
