Acute Membranous Conjunctivitis

 

It is conjunctivitis with true membrane formation usually on palpebral conjunctiva

  1. Etiology
    1. Corynebacterium diphtheriae*
    2. Occasionally by virulent type of streptococcus haemolyticus
  2. C/F:   
    1. Stage of infiltration            
    2. Stage of suppuration                     
    3. Stage of cicatrisation
  3. Complications:       
    1. Corneal ulceration             
    2. Symblepharon
    3. Trichiasis                              
    4. Entropion                 
    5. Conjunctival xerosis
  4. Clinical features:
    1. Usually children
    2. Membrane does not Bleed on peeling          
  5. Treatment:
    1. Anti-diptheric serum
    2. penicillin
