DOC for complicated malaria in pregnancy (LQ)
a. Patients of complicated malaria are treated parenterally.
b. The choice is between quinine and artemisinin deriivatives.
c. Since chloroquine reistance quinine has been the drug of choice.
d. Now gradually artemisinin is being favoured though it is still the second drug of choice.
e. Artemisinin is safer and simpler and associated with a decreased mortality in adults by over a third when compared to quinine.
f. The disadvantages are it has a limited shelf life and is not widely available for parenteral administration.
