National Population Policy (AIIMS Nov’08)

  1. Objective:
    1. Replacement level by 2010 i.e. TFR 2.1
    2. Population stabilization by 2045.
  2. Goals:
    1. 1.school education free & compulsory up to 14 years, reduce drop out rate at primary &secondary level by 20%.
    2. IMR<30 per 1000 live birth.
    3. MMR <100 per 100000 live births.
    4. 80% institute deliveries & 100% by trained person.
    5. 100% registration of birth, death, marriage and preg.
  3. The salient features of the National Population Policy are:
    1. MCH and Family Planning services stand merged with health.
    2. No targets for specific contraceptive methods.
    3. The only target will be achievement of national average of Total Fertility Rate of 2.1 by the year 2010.
    4. Incentives for family planning acceptors to be discontinued.
    5. NGO involvement in the programme promoted.
    6. IEC activities to be implemented.
    7. Reduction in the incidence of girls below 18 getting married to zero.
    8. Increase in percentage of deliveries conducted by trained personnel.
    9. Reduction of maternal mortality rate to < 100 per 100,000 live births.
    10. Universal immunization.
    11. Reduction of IMR to < 30 per 1000 and a sharp decline in Child Mortality Rate.
    12. Universal access to quality contraceptive services.
    13. Containment of HIV/AIDS and STDs.
  4. Targets set for xth five year plan:
    1. Reduction of decadal growth rate (2001-2010) to 16.2%.
    2.  IMR to 45/1000 live birth by 2007 & 28 by 2010.
    3. MMR 2/1000 live birth by 2007 & 1 by 2010.
