Dietary fibre is rich in
a. Consists of all plant cell components that cannot be digested by an animal’s own enzymes eg. Cellulose (most imp.) Hemicellulose, Lignin, gums, pectines and pentosans.
i. In human, a high fiber diet aids water retention, during passage of food along the gut, producing larger softer feces ie. Beneficial for constipation.
ii. A high fiber diet is associated with reduced incidence of —Diverticulosis, cancer of the colon, Cardio vascular disease and Diabetes mellitus.
iii. Cellulose and Lignin (more H2O insoluble) →are beneficial with regard to colonic function
iv. Gums and pectin (more soluble fibers) →blood cholesterol, reduces the rebound fall in Blood glucose in Diabetics.
