Agranulocytosis occurs in a small percentage of patients taking clozapine. This potentially fatal abnormality can develop rapidly, usually between the sixth and the 18th week of therapy. Agranulocytosis is reversible if clozapine is discontinued immediately after a significant decrease in white blood cell count.
