Compartment Syndrome

Compartment syndromes occur as the result of hypoxic damage caused by interruption of the circulation to the muscles.

a. Fasciotomy is recommended in the presence of clinical signs of compartment syndrome, such as undue pain and a palpable firmness in the forearm.

b. The morbidity caused by fasciotomy is minimal, whereas that caused by an untreated compartment syndrome is much greater.

c. The general indications for fasciotomy are Impending tissue ischemia may be considered when the tissue pressure reaches between 30 mm Hg and 10 mm Hg below the diastolic blood pressure. A higher pressure is a strong indication that fasciotomy should be recommended.
