Question

Epiphyseal closure is due to

A thyroxine
B GH

C Androgen
D Cortisol

Ans. C Androgen
  1. Most of the effect of GH to stimulate growth at the epiphyseal plate is indirect.
  2. GH stimulates production of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and it is IGF-1 that directly stimulate chondrocyte cell division and bone growth.
  3. IGF-1 can be considered to act as both a hormone and a paracrine.
  4. Some of the IGF-1 is produced by the liver, and travels to the growth plate via the circulation, while some of the IGF-1 is produced locally by chondrocytes in the growth plate.
  5. Thyroid hormone is important for growth because it promotes growth hormone synthesis. Gonadal steroids, whose secretion increases at puberty, initially promote growth by increasing GH secretion, and then subsequently cause growth to end by causing the closure of the epiphyseal growth plates.
  6. Cortisol, which is released in response to stress, causes an inhibition of growth.
