a. Fern pattern: The cervical mucus assumes palm leaf pattern when placed in a thin layer on a glass slide and allowed to dry.

b. This is seen on microscopic examination of the slide. It occurs during only certain stages of the menstrual cycle.

c. This pattern is caused by crystallization of the mucus as it dries and depends on the concentration of sodium chloride.

d. The salt concentration is determined by the amount of estrogen in the mucus.

Ferning is usually seen at midcycle in normal menstruating women; therefore it may be helpful in determining the time of ovulation in women who have difficulty in becoming pregnant.
