1. HCG or corpus luteum rescue factor is produced from syncytiotrophoblast. It’s production begins once trophoblast differentiates after implantation into syncytiotrophoblast and cytotrophoblast.

2. Its 1/2 life is 1.2 days and doubling time is 2 days. . It has 2 subunits α & β. Theα subunit is similar to that of LH, FSH and TSH.

3. The specific actions are due to β subunit. It’s role is in early pregnancy maintenance were it supports corpus luteum so that it produces adequate progesterone and maintains pregnancy till such time that placenta takes over.

4. If implantation does not occur and HCG is not produced corpus luteum degenerates by 8th day.
