Ans. A i.e. Penetration of basement membrane

Carcinoma in situ is characterized by :

a. Dysplastic changes are marked. b. The entire thickness of the epithelium is involved.

c. Basement membrane is intact. d. There is no tumor in the subepithelial stroma.

e. It is also called as preinvasive neoplasm.

So, when tumor cells move beyond the basement membrane, it is known as invasive tumor.
