Salient feature Small cell carcinoma of lung (oat cell carcinoma)
a. This highly malignant tumor has a distinctive cell type.
b. Necrosis is common and extensive.
c. Azzopardi effect (Basophilic staining of vascular walls) is frequently present.
i. Basophilic staining of vascular walls due to encrustation by DNA from necrotic tumor cells is frequently present.
ii. It contains neurosecretory granules.
d. It also contains -
i. Polypeptide hormone e.g. PTH like peptide.
ii. Neuroendocrine markers à chromogranin, Synaptophysin, Leu 7.
