Acid-Base Disturbance

Question
9 out of 11

If blood gas analysis reveal pH = 7.4, pCO2=30; pO2= 105. This is partially compensated? (AIPG 2010)

A Respiratory acidosis
B Respiratory alkalosis

C Metabolic acidosis
D Metabolic alkalosis

Ans. B

Respiratory alkalosis

If pH = 7.4, pCO2=30; pO2= 105. This is partially compensated metabolic acidosis.

Four categories of acid-base imbalances:

i. Respiratory acidosis—elevation of pCO2 due to ventilation depression

ii. Respiratory alkalosis—depression of pCO2 due to alveolar hyperventilation

iii. Metabolic acidosis—depression of HCO3– or an increase in non-carbonic acids

iv. Metabolic alkalosis—elevation of HCO3– usually due to an excessive loss of metabolic acids
